Welcome to the Rhode Island Veterinary Medical Association
The Rhode Island Veterinary Medical Association was formed in March, 1962 as a non- profit organization by five veterinarians. Applicants paid annual dues of $5.00 to join their colleagues as members. Guided by the principles of veterinary medical ethics, this founding group of veterinarians sought to advance the science and art of veterinary medicine, including its relationship to public health and agriculture by establishing RIVMA. Their vision of the association 45 years ago remains constant today.
In 1970 RIVMA offered its first Scientific Seminar to veterinarians. This seminar offered an opportunity for veterinarians to increase their knowledge on topics in veterinary medicine through day long workshops. This educational forum has been so well received, today RIVMA continues the tradition and expects to welcome close to 400 veterinarians and veterinary technicians from New England and beyond to this year’s Seminar.
Staying true to its original mission to advance the health of animals statewide, over a decade ago, RIVMA established annual low-cost rabies clinics as a public service to Rhode Islanders to protect pets against this disease. Today over 1,300 residents take advantage of this annual opportunity.
To help stop pet overpopulation, the Rhode Island Veterinary Medical Association offers a low-cost spay/neuter program (SNAP) for low-income Rhode Island residents. Moreover, recognizing that a significant number of pet owners experience financial hardship, in 2004 the RIVMA Companion Animal Foundation was established to offer financial assistance for low income pet owners whose companion animals require either emergency or routine medical treatment.
Today RIVMA enjoys a vibrant and active community of veterinary professionals whose dedication to animal welfare reaches beyond their clinic walls. Our membership seeks ways to enhance the veterinary profession through educational, recreational and volunteer activities not only here in Rhode Island but also throughout the country.
